Background of the study

Afrobeat, a genre celebrated for its infectious rhythm and vibrant energy, is deeply rooted in Nigerian culture. Beyond its musicality, Afrobeat is distinguished by its lyrical articulation, which plays a critical role in conveying emotion, cultural narratives, and social commentary. This study examines the phonetic details in Nigerian music lyrics, focusing on Afrobeat songs. The research investigates articulation patterns, such as consonant clarity, vowel modifications, and intonation contours, to determine how these phonetic features contribute to the overall impact of the music. By analyzing audio recordings and lyric transcriptions, the study identifies specific phonetic phenomena that enhance the expressiveness of Afrobeat. Additionally, it considers how artists adapt traditional speech patterns to suit the demands of rhythmic performance and digital production. The findings are expected to shed light on the interplay between music and phonetics, offering insights into how articulation in Afrobeat can reinforce cultural identity and affect listener engagement (Ogunleye, 2023; Afolabi, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the centrality of lyrical articulation in Afrobeat, there is limited empirical research on the phonetic details that contribute to its distinctive style. Variations in pronunciation and articulation may influence listener perception and the cultural impact of the music, yet these aspects remain underexplored (Ogunleye, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

• To document phonetic details in Afrobeat lyrics.

• To analyze articulation patterns and their expressive functions.

• To evaluate the cultural impact of phonetic features.

Research questions:

• What phonetic features characterize Afrobeat articulation?

• How do these features affect listener perception?

• What cultural significance do they hold?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it uncovers the phonetic underpinnings of Afrobeat lyrics, enhancing our understanding of music articulation and its cultural resonance. The findings will benefit musicologists, linguists, and cultural scholars by offering new perspectives on musical expression (Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study focuses exclusively on the phonetic details of Afrobeat lyrics and does not include other musical genres.

Definitions of terms:

• Articulation: The clarity and manner in which speech sounds are produced.

• Phonetic Details: Specific features of sound production in speech.

• Afrobeat: A music genre originating in Nigeria that combines traditional rhythms with modern influences.
